About the Item

High up in the mountains, it is so quiet. The bog grasses stretch out across the blanket bog. Beneath the grasses, the earth glows orange and red, as if sighing. We look up and the blue-violet mountains stand out, silhouetted against the night sky. At the summit, a warm golden light borders, lace-like, the rolling clouds. They too seem to breathe and share their life force. Out of view, the moon illuminates the land and tinges the clouds blue-green. When we awake from a dream, the fragments we remember are often disjointed, without an obvious common thread. When this painting came to life, it felt like a dreamscape. And yet, without really making sense, it felt right. This 23 x 23 X 1..25 oil on deep edged panel is ready to hang. The edges, painted white, are 1.25" deep so framing is not required. All my paintings are varnished to add a protective coat against dust. Only the highest quality archival fine art grade oil paints are used on the surface gessoed and prepared by myself. Packing: all work is packed professionally using protective compressed foam boards 2 cm deep so that your painting arrives safely. Thank you for taking the time to look at my work. A statement on why I make Art. How can I make tangible on a paint surface a world that is full of magic and poetry? My finished pieces do not mirror a subject matter but are a representation of emotions felt in a specific time or place. Often the fleeting effect of a particular light and colour in nature are held somewhere in my visual memory. At some point, this takes centre stage on the painting I am working on. It may appear during the process of creation without an obvious connection to the subject matter at hand and yet, it adds another dimension, a particular atmosphere. These processes are ways and means by which I express my connection to nature in all its richness and variety. I moved from Ireland to France to create a new body of work with the regular discipline of painting small oil studies on panel. These inform larger landscapes, still lifes and abstract works. I hold a Bachelor Degree in Fine Art (BFA). My work is in collections in France, the USA, Great Britain and Ireland. :: Painting :: Impressionist :: This piece comes with an official certificate of authenticity signed by the artist :: Ready to Hang: Yes :: Signed: Yes :: Signature Location: Front bottom right and back of panel :: Wood Panel :: Diagonal :: Original :: Framed: No

"Still Imagined" Oil painting
Located in Denver, CO
Todd Carpenter's (US based) "Still Imagined" is an oil painting that depicts a black and white landscape with leafless trees and saplings together in the dark Bio/artist statement: Todd Carpenter is a Los Angeles based artist who uses black and white paint to explore the perception of space and beauty. Carpenter's formal education is in science - he holds a MS in Neuroscience from UCSD and a BS in Psychobiology from UCLA - and he brings this background into service when making art. His paintings explore the mechanisms of perception and aesthetics, examining among other things how the depiction of light can impart realism and convey emotion. Like his paintings bridging art and science, Carpenter's career has similarly straddled the two fields, and he has taught subjects ranging from neuroscience and environmental science to photography and painting. Artist Statement As a painter, I am particularly interested in how the depiction of light contributes to our experience of paintings. Painting, as with any visual art, is obviously dependent on light. But painting can also have a more specific connection in that the accurate depiction of light is crucial for achieving realism. Realism in paintings largely arises from the portrayal of depth - perceiving a painting as being realistic is equivalent to seeing its subject as existing in more than just the two dimensions of the picture plane - and one of the mechanisms by which humans perceive depth is through lighting cues. Light creates features such as shading, shadow, and contrast that tell us about the three-dimensional arrangement of our surroundings, and artists often use these features to impart realism to paintings. Light also factors in to the emotional impact of paintings. The differential illumination of our surroundings can evoke different moods, as evidenced by the influence sunsets, candlelight, and darkness can have on us. Such effectssuggest that our perception of light could be tied to primitive instincts, with light signaling factors such as shelter, nightfall, and warmth, which were once crucial for survival. The depiction of light in paintings...
