About the Item
Attributed to Juan Bautista Martínez del Mazo (Castile 1611 - Madrid 1667) pupil and collaborator of Diego Velázquez
Portrait of Charles II, King of Spain, as a child (1661 -1700)
Spain, c. 1670 Oil on canvas 68 x 49 cm. - In antique frame 96 x 75 cm.
The analysis of this portrait, and in particular the style with which its features have been outlined, brings us back to the great tradition of the 17th century Spanish school.
The portrait depicts the young King Charles II of Spain, dressed in typical Spanish fashion, the youngest and only son of Philip IV of Spain and his second wife Maria Anna of Austria, as well as the last of the Habsburg dynasty to rule Spain. which portrayed the young ruler in full length at the age of four (dated 1665), dressed in a black suit and cape, and a large feathered hat, presumably shortly after the death of his father Philip IV, to celebrate the young man's accession to the throne and his proclamation as King of Spain. (see photo in detail)
He holds a sceptre in his left hand and wears the Order of the Golden Fleece, while the hilt of a silver-adorned sword is visible from his left cuff, adding to the formality and solemnity of the portrait.
The original composition, as well as the proposed one, initially attributed to Veleasquez (Seville 1599 - Madrid 1660), was later attributed to the paintings of his son-in-law Juan Bautista Martínez del Mazo, a pupil of Velázquez, and then his collaborator for almost three decades, in the production of court portraits.
The long period of close association enabled him to fully assimilate the style of his master, creating compositions that strongly reveal his direct influence.
After Velázquez's death in 1660, Mazo succeeded his father-in-law as court painter to Philip IV of Spain, then to Charles II until his death in 1667.
Our canvas is a replica of the large painting in the Royal Collection, made by Mazo himself in a smaller format, depicting the king in half length, presumably as a gift for a representative occasion.
Several other similar versions of the composition are known; an anonymous work in the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, in which the child king holds a globe and a sceptre but which is otherwise close to the painting in the Royal Collection and another anonymous version in the Prado Museum (P002534).
In the latter, the lying lion is missing and a dog has been added.

Portrait Philip V King Rigaud Paint Oil on canvas 17/18th Century Old master Art

Hyacinthe Rigaud (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743) Circle
Portrait of Philip V, King of Spain (Versailles 1683 - Madrid 1746)
Oil on canvas
72 x 59 cm - framed 87 x 74 cm.
The painting examined here, depicting King Philip V of Spain (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743), is to be placed in the circle of the painter Hyacinthe Rigaud (Perpignan 1659 - Paris 1743), one of the most significant portrait painters of his time and a great interpreter of the French school.
This is a work of excellent pictorial quality: note the rendering of the facial features and the sharpness of the contours emphasised by the light. The face is characterised by chiaroscuro passages that verisimilarly reproduce light and its effects, rendered with great skill.
Philip V wears a black satin costume with a sword at his side, he wears the stiff white Spanish collar and at the same time wears the blue sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit and the collar of the Habsburg Order of the Golden Fleece: this bringing together of the two main orders of France and Spain announced the possibility of a union between the two crowns.
In Spanish costume, this effigy is nevertheless fully in line with the French tradition of ceremonial portraiture, also testifying to the renewal that Rigaud had brought about, particularly through the relationship between the character and the splendour of the decoration.
The work is inspired, reworked in a reduced format to make it suitable for a private clientele, by the large painting that Rigaud made for the sovereign around 1700, today conserved in the Louvre, reproduced by the same workshop in numerous other versions.

Portrait Noble Man Ceresa Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17th Century Italy Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Carlo Ceresa (San Giovanni Bianco 1609 - Bergamo 1679) attributable
Full-length portrait of Giacomo Pesenti
Oil on canvas (206 x 121 cm - in frame 212 x 133 cm.)
This fascinating portrait, portraying a full-length gentleman and datable to the 17th century, illustrates the stylistic and compositional details typical of the pictorial production of the Lombardy area, Bergamo in particular. This reference is reflected in elements such as the natural light, the sober and austere setting and, above all, the subtle psychological characterisation of the face.
We are inclined to identify the hand of portrait painter Carlo Ceresa, one of the most illustrious Bergamasque figure painters of the 17th century, capable of developing a style of intense realism and acute psychological investigation. In his works, and our portrait perfectly reflects his canons, an extraordinary naturalistic imprint, great realism and remarkable essentiality are evident.
Those traits of severity, moral rigour and austerity typical of his portraiture find a perfect balance here: never courtly or rhetorical, his portraits are profoundly linked to the concept of counter-reform. Immortalising the main personalities of the time, he established himself as a point of reference for the Bergamasque aristocracy, from the Vertova to the Pesenti to the Secco Suardo.
The subject of the portrait is Giacomo Pesenti, here immortalised life-size in a rigorous black suit, his left hand resting on a table, on which is placed the necessities for writing and a manuscript, and his right hand, with a sealed ring on his little finger, abandoned along his side while he holds his gloves.
He wears a suit of incredible rigour, dressed as befits a man of his high social standing, while the sharp light focuses on his face, with an intensity that seems to be accentuated by the reflection of the white collar, with its sharp profile.
For Ceresa, it is not the richness of the garment that gives value to the person portrayed, it is the need to give feeling and bring out the character of the person, and this he succeeds in marvellously, aided by his ability to capture the essence of the person and return it to us in painting through the face and light used as a strong expressive element.
In fact, the image highlights that 'counter-reformed' composure typical of the portraiture of painters active in this area and era, adhering to a verism...

This superb Dutch Golden Age portrait is attributed to circle of Dutch artist Wybrand Simonsz de Geest. Painted in 1666 it is a full length portrait of a young William Stonestreet. He is holding the paw of a clipped little white dog with drapes and clouds beyond. (It was common practise to dress young boys in dresses up to the age of about 6 or 7 when they were 'britched' or wore britches). An excellent example of Dutch Golden Age art that wouldn't look out of place in a museum.
Wm Stonestreet 1666, Prebend of Selsely is inscribed top left.
Provenance. Berkshire estate.
Condition. Oil and canvas, 44 inches by 36 inches and in good condition.

Wybrand Simonsz. de Geest (16 August 1592 – c. 1661) was a Dutch Golden Age portrait painter from Friesland in the Netherlands. Wybrand de Geest was born and died at Leeuwarden. He learned painting from his father, Simon Juckesz, a stained glass worker. He studied later with Abraham Bloemaert. From 1614 to 1618 he travelled in France and Italy on a Grand Tour. In 1616 he met up with Leonard Bramer in Aix-en-Provence. While in Rome he became a member of the painters' circle known as the Bentvueghels. He earned the nickname 'De Friesche Adelaar', or "the Frisian Eagle". De Geest married Hendrickje Fransdr Uylenburgh in 1622, a niece of Saskia van Uylenburgh...

Portrait of a Young Gentleman - Dutch Old Master 17thC art portrait oil painting
Located in London, GB
This superb Dutch Old Master portrait oil painting is attributed as by a follower of Dutch 17th century artist Gerrard van Honthorst. The original of this painting hangs in Wilton House, Wiltshire, home to the 18th Earl and Countess of Pembrokeshire. The painting was previously attributed to Van Dyck by early cataloguers, but after exhaustive comparisons with the two Honthorst brothers' works, it was concluded that Gerrard van Honthorst was the artist who painted the original in Wilton House. Our painting was painted circa 1695 by a follower of Gerrard Honthorst. It was sold to us as circle of Cornelius Johnson.
The sitter is Prince Rupert of the Rhine, Duke of Cumberland, Earl of Holderness (1619-1682). He was an English army officer, admiral, scientist, and colonial governor. He first came to prominence as a Royalist cavalry commander during the English Civil War. Rupert was the third son of the German...

Great Spanish painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting a religious subject, Pope Innocent III confirms the Franciscan Rule, of good pictorial quality. Artwork that develops horizontally, ideal for placing in an important hall or study, for antique dealers and interior decorators. A painting that shows various signs of aging and old restorations (see photo), in a beautiful patina. The perspective offered by the painter is pleasant.
