About the Item
My art practice is based on exploration and experimentation. I do not adhere to a recognizable style. Rather my method of producing work is informed and finds it's cohesiveness by the colors I use, the forms that I use such as the grid, stripes, triangles, solid blocks of colors, geometric shapes and minimalist tendencies. Funky Nassau is named after the black, blue and yellow stripes in the lower right side of this painting which are the colors of the Bahamas flag. The title Funky Nassau is also the name of a very popular record of 1971, by the band The Beginning of The End. The Bahamas are also the ancestral home of my husband. We have visited Nassau, which is the capital, Freeport and Turks and Caicos many times. The choice of the colors were not intentional. During the composition of this painting, which is all based on stripes, I went through many different color changes. This painting is a diptych which consists of two 30" x 40" x 1.5" canvases for a total of 60" x 40" x 1.5" if placed one on top of the other or 30" x 80" x 1.5" if placed side by side. It will be shipped in a special custom made box and the two canvases can simply be hung one on top of the other or side by side or they can be attached together with brackets, which I will supply with directions and pre-drilled holes for the brackets. :: Painting :: Contemporary :: This piece comes with an official certificate of authenticity signed by the artist :: Ready to Hang: Yes :: Signed: Yes :: Signature Location: Signed dated and titled on back :: Canvas :: Portrait :: Original :: Framed: No

48 x 104 in. / 4 x 8.6 ft (2 panels) "Chromatic Fantasy" Large Oil on Linen
By Alexis Portilla
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This is a beautiful, abstract expressionist oil painting on linen by Alexis Portilla. This piece is in 2 panels.
He obtained his Masters of Fine Arts at Columbia University in 1990. His bold linear lines, use of symbols, pictographs and strong colors create atmospheric abstracts. Influenced by the emotion of artistic expression in music, poetry and literature, the artist finds bold expression in color, lines and shapes that resemble pictographs, and texture.
“Using simple forms and creating swathes of rich texture, Alexis Portilla builds atmospheric abstract paintings that convey a sense of time having passed. Brushy areas of color suggest the indeterminacy of memory, while bold linear forms speak for the present.” “In some of his smaller works, Portilla experimented with beeswax. Applying a smooth coat of wax over the surface, the artist sealed in his sparse, abstract forms, while leaving whole sections empty, the images hover in the wax, as if frozen in time, yet the pieces have a fresh, almost dewy look.”
- Meredith Mendelsohn, Art News magazine review.
The artist has shown in group and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His works have been commissioned by major corporations, universities and for private collections.
