About the Item

Bio: Katie Kuzin is an abstract artist from the vibrant art scene of New York City. With her unique style and innovative approach, she has garnered recognition and acclaim in both Manhattan and Brooklyn, showcasing her works at art shows including at Maison 10, the Hamptons Fine Art Fair: Art Affair, Pancakes and Booze, and at Tanya Weddemire Gallery. Her paintings have found homes in collections spanning the United States and abroad. Statement: Today, I work as a painter and curator. For several years, I had the privilege of working at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. My role required me to merge scientific knowledge with artistic presentation to create engaging exhibitions. The Smithsonian sharpened my organizational and artistic skills and fostered a strong commitment to education and the dissemination of knowledge. Collaborating with experts to create immersive experiences has taught me the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in producing meaningful content that resonates with diverse audiences. In this vein, I've been working as an artist in New York City, out of my studio in lower Manhattan. My approach combines my artistic vision with a unique method of painting I developed. I mix paint with alcohol, dish soap, sand, plaster, and other materials to draw the viewer in and create a natural, biological, feel. My work is a two dimensional representation of a 'burst' of creative energy and the ‘growth’ of plant life. Through my art, I aim to create dialogue among viewers and am inspired by the natural world to create multi-layered art using vibrant colors.

Palavra #2
By Paulo Canilhas
Located in Brooklyn, NY
I am fascinated by the individual’s relationship within society. It is in this context that I exist. Along the beaten path, I allow myself to observe from a multitude of vantage points; towards the recent past or a future yet to occur. This is what inspires me- the creative moment yet to happen, laden with limitless possibilities. When I take a look at the past, I identify social and personal nuances and their direct influence on my work, and then with excitement look for what comes next. In this process I take distance from myself and view with a critical eye. Ever evolving, I search for more. I am neither a painter nor sculptor, much less a photographer or director, but I am a little bit of everything. I don’t feel bound to one specialized art form, and this allows me to navigate free and unencumbered by norms and expectations. My goal is not to achieve perfection in any one area, but rather to explore all disciplines- joyfully challenging myself, provoking and exploring beyond any pre-conceived limits. In my work I try to establish a connection between my reality and the reality of those who dedicate a few minutes of observation. I’m constantly searching for the vanishing point that gives diverse expression to my artistic production. This is the creative fuel that drives me ever forward. Paulo Canilhas...

Artist commentary: I like to transport my mind to a calming place, inspired by memories, and complex organic elements found in nature. Playing with colors and movement, creating new compositions -- my best work comes when there is freedom to create without any strict plan. With intuition and spontaneity taking over, the result is often a surprise. To me, everything flows, and there is always a sense of balance and harmony that can emerge out of disorder. I love the ambiguous and mysterious nature of abstraction. Through self-discovery and experimentation, I am allowing dynamic energy that manifests through the joy of creating. The result is loose interpretations of anything that exists between the mind and reality, therefore each painting is unique and sometimes inexplicable. About the Artist: Ethereal and calming, Novi Lim's painting transports its audience to a land that is both dreamlike yet familiar. Lim Finds inspiration in the natural world, and seeks to capture their essence through an organic and sensory creative process. In the artist's own words: "Often, imagining a mythical flower that blooms and lit up in the nighttime or seeing something as simple as the calming gradient of the colorful sky at sundown, or the surface of water that glimmers which makes me wonder about the mystery of the deepest oceans -- piqued my creative process and subliminal stimuli." Guided by instinctive feeling, Lim lets the movements of her paintbrush flow as she experiments with atmospheric lighting, transparency, and color. The result is an ambiguous landscape that treads between the subconscious and waking world.
