About

"Village paysage enneigé en hiver" ("Snowy Village Landscape in Winter") Albert Alexandre Lenoir (1801-1891) Original Antique Old Master Oil Painting, oil on chamfered wooden panel, c. 1845 A pristine oil painting, rendered by Lenoir in excruciating detail, painted with painstakingly detailed fine brushstrokes. Albert Alexandre Lenoir (1801-1891) Andre Albert Alexandre was born in Paris.  He began his painterly studies under the famed Jean Baptiste Debret. Albert Alexandre Lenoir was a true genius, who bestrode his era in the 1800’s, gaining renown as a painter, historian, archaeologist, writer and traveler.  In 1819, Lenoir entered the workshop of the architect François Debret after studying at the College de Henri IV.  In 1820, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts. He is famous for having created the Museum of the Middle Ages in Paris in 1844 and having run it for 40 years. Lenoir was an early medievalist and archaeologist, architect and founder of the Musée Cluny in Paris.  Lenoir trained as an architect under François Debret. Like his father, he adopted a strong interest in medieval architecture over the dominant classical style.  From 1830 he studied Etruscan architecture in Italy, afterward traveling to Greece and Asia Minor to examine Byzantine monuments.  He published his findings in a series of essays in the "Annales de l'Institut de Archéologique of Rome." For three years, Lenoir traveled through Italy and Sicily.  This taste for travel, begun in 1824 in the South of France, never left him.  In 1836, commissioned by the State, he went to the East to study Byzantine art. He then stayed in Athens and visited Constantinople, the Adriatic Sea as well as Venice and Switzerland. On his return from Italy, Lenoir began to exhibit his paintings in 1833 at the Salon de Paris. His fame grew quickly, particularly in his favored depictions of winter landscapes, as seen in today's offering, "Village paysage enneigé en hiver." In 1845, Lenoir was appointed Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur. After his return to France, Lenoir's plans for a museum for the objects formerly in the Musée des Petits-Augustins was chosen.   In 1844 he advocated combining the buildings of the Hôtel de Cluny and the Palais des Thermes which was done to form the Musée Cluny, which to this day houses important medieval artifacts. In 1884 he was elected as first President of the "Société des amis des monuments de Paris." Albert Alexandre Lenoir's contributions to the literature of architecture also made him extremely well-known.  Beginning in 1852 he published his "Architecture monastique," a large illustrated study of religious architecture. This was followed by a work on military architecture co-produced with Prosper Mérimée.  Plesase take the time to study today’s painting, "Village paysage enneigé en hiver."  It is a marvelous antique oil painting The painstaking attention to detail is truly remarkable.  The interplay of sun and clouds is truly charming and superbly rendered. Albert Alexandre Lenoir’s oil paintings display a meticulous attention to detail.  His most-desired works are his views of wintry landscapes, frozen rivers, ice skaters and snowy landscapes. "Village paysage enneigé en hiver" is in impeccable, museum-quality condition. The painting is presented in its original gilt antique frame.
