Artist Statement:
I am drawn to contrasts. I grew up within a worldview which emphasized moral absolutes while also extolling liberal "free-thinking."
In my work, I sift through desire, fear, and faith to combine concepts I feel are paradoxical: attraction & repulsion, ideal & flawed, terrifying & comforting, repressed & exalted. Spirited color and active brushwork weave these contrasting ideas across each other to build up a kind of unstable middle ground on the canvas.
Binding my subject matter to intimate sources - primarily my husband, my family, myself - I apply multiple layers of oil paint through anxious compulsion. With each approach to the canvas I negotiate descriptive applications of paint. Embodying tension throughout the image, passages of acute focus contrast with less-developed space. Researching, redrawing, repainting, I obsessively return to the human form, finding satisfaction when I paint flesh explicitly.
