About the Item

Signed lower right, 'Charles Killgore' (American, 1889-1979) and painted circa 1940. (N.B. the artist's last name variant is 'Kilgore). Born in Huntington, West Virginia, Charles Killgore graduated from Marshall College before studying at the Art Institute of Chicago. During World War I, Killgore served in the camouflage corps and was trained to camouflage cannons and worked with the artists, Orrin White and Grant Wood. Over the next forty years, he traveled extensively, including twelve trips to Mexico and forty-one trips to California, where he often painted beside Orrin White, who was based Pasadena. Over the course of his long professional career, Charles Killgore exhibited widely and with success and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including from the Art Institute of Chicago, 1933-1939 (1935 prize), the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art (1928, 1930-1932) and Des Moines, with Orrin White and Grant Wood (1933).
