About the Item

Christopher Masoure was born into an artistic family in 1957 in Toronto. He began painting at an early age following his father’s footsteps. Educated in fine arts at the Art Institute in the United States, upon his return to Toronto he began a career in Sales and Marketing and continued to paint. His early work consisted mainly of abstracts, but has more recently evolved into abstract landscapes. Chris Masoure’s work has a zen like presence. Working in acrylic on canvas he is inspired by the works of the New York Expressionist from the 1950’s and J M W Turner, the British landscape painter. The combination of various colours, application and process is intended to suggest a harmonic composition. "My practice consists mainly around a reduced visual vocabulary to evoke a feeling of tranquility and peacefulness. Whether through life experiences or imagination I paint to give the viewer the opportunity to explore and navigate their own conclusions. Some view the paintings as land or as sea, mountains or as clouds. I apply many thin layers of paint with palette knives and brushes to create a soothing atmospheric finish that invites the viewer to navigate and discover. Layering also gives a perception of depth. Just like in nature, balance is always occurring between all elements. With that in mind, I strive to express the sensation of that balance".
