Daniel Sherrin
The Village Path after the Rain

About the Item

Daniel Sherrin Picture Size: 24 x 42" (60 x 105cm) Outside Frame Size: 35 x 53" (87.5 x 132.5cm) A spectacular example of Sherrin's work in an English gold leaf swept frame. Daniel Sherrin was born in Brentford , Essex in 1868. The son of John Sherrin R.I.- the well-known flower and still life painter. There is no record of him receiving a formal training, but it is probable that as with many of his contemporaries he studied with his father. Most of Daniel Sherrin’s work is in the style of several popular artists of the time. He painted rural landscapes after the style of Benjamin W. Leader; marines after very similar to those of Thomas Somerscales and early Montague Dawson's and river scenes in watercolour after Stuart Lloyd. He did not exhibit in London, but preferred to work directly under contract for the gallery- painting the subject (and styles) that they required. He was born in Brentford, Essex before the family moved to Ramsgate when Daniel was a young boy, and his father died there in 1896. His pictures are regularly seen on the market and are highly sought after and are featured in many collections throughout the world. His paintings were sometimes used for book illustrations and engravings and a scene entitled "In the Highlands" can be seen in "British Highways and Byways from a Motor Car" by Thomas D. Murphy published in 1908. A picture of Sandringham was commissioned from him by King George V and hangs in Buckingham Palace. The Imperial War Museum in London also have material related to his work on the design of recruiting posters for the First World War. One poster was successful in recruiting over 1000 men which resulted in congratulations from Lord Kitchener. Daniel Sherrin later moved to Seasalter near Whitstable, Kent and died there on 26 January 1940. The artistic talent was carried to a third generation for his son Reginald Sherrin (q.v.) also became an artist. Daniel Sherrin sometimes used the name L. Richards on his work. Two smaller pieces by Sherrin went for $16 000.

Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), this painting was acquired by Saltire Gallerie with a larger painting signed by Hulk the Younger, (just SOLD). Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky. Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year.
