Darius Yektai
Silver Pond V

2022

About the Item

A representational abstract depiction of "Silver Pond" on Long Island. Darius Yektai dives back into his popular "Silver Pond" palette in this dreamy waterscape. He paints his canvas in oil and acrylic, pours epoxy resin over the composition, then finishes off the artwork with more oil paint. The resin creates a reflective surface between the layers of paint. Yektai has been continuously inspired by Claude Monet's Waterlilies series, and in 2022 has expanded his vision to create a truly unique series of paintings. Artist Bio: Darius Yektai was born in Southampton NY, in 1973. He lives and works out of his home and studio in Sag Harbor. He grew up in a cultural home of art and artists, with his Greek-American Mother, and his Father, Manoucher Yektai, an Iranian who emigrated to the US after the Second World War, was a prominent Hamptons AbEx painter. Darius has picked up some traits from his father but pushes even further into what is now completely his-own. Darius' most recent body of work is bright, colorful, with oil and acrylic paints laid on thick. He's creating sculptural paintings that can't be read from left to right, they need to be examined from surface to base, from section to section, and then overall as an encompassing whole.

  • "Green Lilies, Magenta Barn" 2022 oil and resin painting, abstract landscape
    By Darius Yektai
    Located in Sag Harbor, NY
In this affecting composition, Yektai combines the dynamism of the abstract expressionist style with the soft, meditative qualities of Monet's waterlilies. Yektai first paints the canvas with loose strokes of rich deep greens. A pinkish red abstract form takes center stage - ang highlights of yellow flank the edges. Then he pours a clear-grade liquid resin onto the painted canvas and lets it harden into a glassy surface. Finally, he uses linear brushstrokes connecting colors into forms, in the typical impressionist style. Yektai varies the volume in which he applies paint, from thin and dry to sopping wet and thick. This process allows for a more three-dimensional experience of the painting. One can see through layers which build-up to create the flurry of brushstrokes. The reflective surface makes space for the viewer to see themselves in the painting, looking back at them. A contemporary notion.
