This is one of a series of paintings inspired by the song “Small Hours” John Martyn
Oil on board 80 x 53cm
It is framed in a black gallery frame with bronze edges. ( Framed size 86 x 59cm )
The painting is done with a pallet knife and scraper. It is evocative of the Small Hours on a summers day out in the fields. It is said that the original song which was the inspiration behind this painting was recorded in a field at around 3.00am. I made the painting to try to reflect the stillness which is captured in the original recording.
The paint was applied with a pallet knife, thick impasto, then scraped off to leave the board stained with the solid blocks of colour. The painting was then blended with the back of the knife with fresh paint applies where needed to give a rich dark sky of the early morning. The evocative small hours of the day have a particular stillness and serenity which is present in the absence of thinking.
This painting is one of a set of four in the same style and colour pallet. This one "Small Hours II" was the fourth in the series to try to capture the particular atmosphere of the small hours and the softness of the track by John Martyn.
