Don Athay
Earth's Magic

2009

About the Item

"Earth's Magic" by Don Athay, acrylic and oil, 19 1/2 X 23 1/2 inches "At this point in my life as an aspiring artist, I find myself composing paintings that reflect my feelings, when standing before the magnificence of natural settings in various seasons. I also am intrigued by the endless opportunities afforded me (design and color) by flowers in their vast variety. Since I can only come to terms with a portion of that natural setting, I tend to explore that within the confines of the paper or canvas, using various media in order to achieve a work of art. The exploratory action with the paint and the tool is the thing!" - Don Athay

San Rafael Reef #2, acrylic on panel, 11 x 37 1/2 inches, $2,200 “It is my feeling that the desert country of the American West is too large, too wild, too gorgeous to be encompassed by traditional landscape painting. Our inherited aesthetic defines beauty in landscape as green and arable land or grand, breathtaking places. I feel the need to expand that definition. I want to portray the desert as it is right now; to dispense with the limitations of what has come before, to quietly point out the beauty of places that are harsh and forbidding to habitation but express an aesthetic of the wild. I strive to go beyond the sentimentality that often defines our images of the West. The scale of many of my pieces (an extreme horizontal) is a compositional strategy to capture the vastness of these places.” – M. Knudsen Mark Knudsen...

Outcrop, acrylic on paper, 22 x 15 inches (framed size: 26 x 18.5 inches), $670 Josanne Glass paintings focus on color, texture and surface quality, resulting in work that is simultaneously minimalist and organic, creating a tension between restraint and abandon. Objects, if any, and ground are treated equally. The abstract paintings begin on paper or canvas with a textured base. From there, simple lines or shapes are added, and quite often followed by actions (carving, sanding) that create unplanned patterns or textures that will ultimately define the painting. "Approach to Lee's Ferry" by Kim Whitesides, oil on canvas, 18 X 22 inches (Framed size: 21.5 x 25.5 inches) Whitesides made an impact in the art community at a very young age. While working as an illustrator in New York City from the late 60s through the mid 80s, his paintings appeared in many publications, including Time Magazine, Rolling Stone and Playboy. 25th Street, by Elise Zoller, 24 x 30 in. oil on panel. Elise Zoller has recently embarked on a series of plein air paintings of sites around Salt Lake City and in the smaller towns of Utah from Hurricane to Huntsville. She has enjoyed meeting people along the road and learning about the history of the state. “Plein air work can be physically demanding, but there is no substitute for working from life. Light and shadow dance in subtle ways a photograph cannot capture. Even the wind and the fragrances it carries inform the work. Scenes come alive when you stand in one place for a few hours. You’ve got to get to know a spot,” Elise says. “While I work, all manner of people come up and talk to me about their towns and their lives. I’ve met a downwinder from Enterprise, pie bakers in Veyo, pony cart...
