Doris Lyons Hoover (American, 1927-2014) was born in Fort Payne, Alabama, on Oct. 8, 1927, on her grandparents' farm. She was raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and attended college at the University of Chattanooga, (now UTC) where she received honors in ar. At U.C. she met her husband Jack Hoover, and the couple moved to Palo Alto in 1954.
Doris Hoover became a nationally known fabric artist, teacher, lecturer and co-founder of the Peninsula Stitchery Guild, a leading organization in the Bay Area Crafts Movement of the 1970s. Her beautiful, often playful quilts, soft sculptures and creative stitchings grace homes, offices, and museums throughout California and beyond. She also authored "Too Hot to Handle: Potholders and How to Make Them," and co-authored "Tassels," another how-to book. Art permeated Hoover's life, and both her home and garden were a constantly evolving visual feast enjoyed by friends and family. An archive of her work in fabric art has been established at Vanderbilt University.

California Tonalism was art movement that existed in California from circa 1890 to 1920. Tonalist are usually intimate works, painted with a limited palette. Tonalist paintings are softly expressive, suggestive rather than detailed, often depicting the landscape at twilight or evening, when there is an absence of contrast. Tonalist paintings could also be figurative, but in them, the figure was usually out of doors or in an interior in a low-key setting with little detail. Tonalism had its origins in the works of the French Barbizon school and in the works of American painters who were influenced by them. California Tonalism was born when the emphasis in California landscape painting passed from the grand landscapes of works like those of Thomas Hill and William Keith's early career, to more intimate views of a domesticated landscape.
