Signed, lower left, with monogram, 'E. A.', for Edna Wright Andrade (American, 1917-2008) and dated 1954. Additionally signed, verso. A luminous, mid-century landscape by this notable woman artist, teacher and winner of the Childe Hassam prize whose work is held in the permanent collections of numerous national museums including the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Edna Wright Andrade first studied at the Pennsylvania School of the Fine Arts (1933-1938) where she was the recipient of the Cresson European traveling scholarship (1936-1937). Over the course of a long career, she exhibited widely and with success including at the Des Moines Art Center, Iowa (1966), the Philbrook Art Center (OK, 1968), Pennsylvania School of the Fine Arts (1968, Mary Smith Prize winner), Montclair Art Museum (NJ, 1969), Colorado Springs Art Center (1970) and the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1972). Andrade was an elected member of numerous art associations including the Print Club (board member, 1972), the American Color Print Society, the Peale Club and the Artists Equity Association. In 1957, Andrade was appointed Professor at the Philadelphia College of Art where she served until 1972 when she accepted the position of Professor of Art at Temple University. A retrospective survey of the artist's work, titled "Cool Waves and Hot Blocks: The Art of Edna Andrade," was held at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1993. Over the course of a long and successful career, Andrade was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including the Childe Hassam Memorial Purchase Award and the American Academy of Arts and Letters award twice (1967, 1968). Andrade's work can be found in the permanent collections of numerous national institutions including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania School of the Fine Arts, Yale Art Gallery, Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, N.Y. and New Jersey's Montclair Art Museum among others.
