Pen and Ink Drawing with Watercolour on Watercolour Paper.Elizabeth Chalmers was born in Northern Ireland, where she studied art and design at Belfast before beginning a very successful career as a pen and ink artist specializing in buildings and townscapes. In later years, having moved with her family firstly to Cornwall, then Berkshire and subsequently to the Cotswolds, she turned to watercolour landscapes. Elizabeth Chalmers was an artist whose love of the English countryside shines through her delicate watercolour paintings. Now resident in the Cotswolds, in an area of outstanding natural beauty, her subjects include the fine historic villages and quaint old cottages in the surrounding area, as well as flower studies and landscape details. Elizabeth commented: "I have always loved to draw and paint, even as a small child. I drew on everything - steamed up windows and the landing walls of my childhood home, which were painted in magnolia, a perfect base for drawing. This was not very popular! I am happiest when I have a pencil or paint brush in my hand. The countryside still delights me - I love the curves of the landscape and the way the houses and villages grow out of the land. I prefer to paint on location, despite the vagaries of the British weather, and occasionally manage a trip to somewhere warm. Italy, France and Spain, the Isles of Scilly and Barbados offer favourite subjects - geraniums on a Mediterranean balcony , or a quiet street corner, with the interplay of sunshine and shadows.

- Sunday on the Wye, Traditional Statement Watercolour Painting, Extra Large ArtLocated in Deddington, GBSunday on the Wye [2021] SOLD UNFRAMED Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look The artist comments "I painted 'Sunday on the Wye' after a day on the river canoeing with the family. It was a wonderful day meandering down stream near Symonds Yat. We turned the bend to see other boats congregated on the pebbles for a Sunday picnic. We beached our boat to take in the surroundings. The day was a great experience with sparkling light on the water and the sounds of the water over rocks. A few quick sketches and many photographs allowed me to then work at a large scale in the studio. It was painted with large brushes with watercolour. The chosen colours are blue and green. The painterly brush marks hold an energy and excitement of the days paddling." This work is sold unframed Artwork by artist Leigh Glover...Category

- Early 19th Century English watercolour of woodland near Croxdale HallLocated in Harkstead, GBA very attractive and meticulously executed view of a rocky landscape within the woods dating to 1823. This would suit a library or study with its muted tones and skifull draughtsmanship. William Nicholson (1781-1844) Near Croxdale Hall Signed with initials and inscribed with title and date 1823 Pen, ink and grey wash 11 x 8 inches, image only 17 x 13 inches without frame The portrait-painter and etcher William Nicholson was born in Ovingham-on-Tyne, Northumberland, on Christmas Day 1781. His family transferred to Newcastle when his father was appointed Headmaster of the city's Grammar School. At an early age, though, Nicholson appears to have moved to Hull where he made his artistic debut, painting miniatures of officers garrisoned there. He was almost entirely self-taught, learning his craft through the close study of artworks in private and public galleries. He subsequently returned to Newcastle where he received many commissions to paint portraits of the old families of Northumberland. In 1808, he began to exhibit at the Royal Academy, continuing to do so until 1822. By 1814, Nicholson, whose mother was a Scot, had moved to Edinburgh where he set up as a miniaturist and painter in oils. Soon, however, he began to specialize in watercolour portraits. Early subjects included the actor Daniel Terry and the poet and novelist James Hogg. In 1818 he began to publish a series of Portraits of Eminent Scotsmen, etched from his own portraits and those of other painters. Besides Scott and Hogg, the subjects included the writers Robert Burns, John Wilson ('Christopher North'), and Lord Jeffrey, the painters Sir Henry Raeburn, the divines Alexander Carlyle and Alexander Cameron, the engineer James Watt, the architect John Playfair, and the song-collector and composer George Thomson...Category
