About the Item

“Indian Dwelling” is an original watercolor painting created in 1920 by early California Modernist/Tonalist artist Francis John McComas (1875 – 1938). The work measures 7 1/2 x 9 inches unframed, and 16.5 x 18.5 x 2 inches in a custom gilt frame matted under glass. The painting is signed by the artist lower right. This is an excellent example of the artist's California tonalist style, featuring warm monochromatic colors. He was well known for his southwestern landscape scenes featuring indian subjects, and this painting shows his mastery of this genre. This painting is in mint condition with no restoration. The colors are vibrant and original. Francis John McComas is best known for his Modernist and Tonalist California landscape paintings of oak trees and cypresses, as well has his southwestern indian scenes, such as this one. He was born in Tasmania in 1875 and moved to San Francisco in 1898. He was a student of Arthur Mathews at the Mark Hopkins Institute, an influential artist who specialized in the California Decorative Style. He then traveled to Paris to study at the Academie Julian, and returned to San Francisco in 1902. He painted in New Mexico and Arizona in 1909-1910, then moved to Carmel, California in 1912. His works were displayed in the Armory Show in New York City in 1913, and at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915. He enjoyed a long, successful career, and was a member of the San Francisco Art Association, the Salmagundi Club, the American Watercolor Society, and the Society of American Artists. His works have been exhibited at the Bohemian Club, the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, and his paintings can be found in the collections of the Oakland Museum, the De Young Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum. He in died in 1938 in Pebble Beach.
