About the Item
This dramatic snowy mountainous landscape oil painting is by British artist Francis Wynne Thomas. It was painted circa 1945 when Thomas was in Germany painting. The composition is a series of snow covered mountains, viewed from the top of the nearest mountain. It is a glorious sunny day with a blue sky. In the foreground, a couple stand taking in the view around them, their skis upturned in the snow behind them. Their relative size helps to put into perspective the vastness of the mountains. Interestingly, there are three sets of skis and only two people in the painting. Does the third set belong to the artist who has is painting Plein Air before skiing down with them? Thomas uses a superb palette of blues, purples and pinks for the snow and is clearly a fan of snowy scenes which he captures perfectly with great brushwork. A fantastic example of Thomas' work and we would welcome any thoughts on the exact mountain location.

Provenance. Sussex estate.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 24 inches by 20 inches unframed, in good condition.
Frame. Housed in a complementary frame 31 inches by 27 inches framed and in good condition.
Francis Wynne Thomas (1907-1989). Painter and art teacher born in Bromley, Kent. He was an architectural graduate from Cambridge University but went on to study art Heatherley's (1930-34) under Frederick Whiting. In 1949 he was on the staff at Haetherley's. His work can be heavily stylised. He showed at the RA, RP, UA, RSA, RCamA and elsewhere. He lived in London. Painted in England and Europe, mainly landscapes. Died 1989.
