Gabriel Belos
La Maison Rose, Neigée.

Early 20th Century

About the Item

French oil on board snow scene of La Maison Rose by Gabriel Belos. Signed bottom left, titled and also signed to the rear of the panel. Presented in plain wood frame. The title may be a reference to the famous cafe in Paris frequented by all the great artists at the beginning of the 20th century. Belos's talent for drawing had not gone unnoticed during his childhood so it was not surprising that by 1910 he had already exhibited a painting at the Salon des Indépendants. He then went on to further develop his talent and explore a new found interest in woodcutting. This newly discovered technique inspired the work ' L'Ile Saint-Louis ' which he produced entirely on his own , a collection of prose and illustrations, the whole of which (images in black, text, monochrome, binding) is by his own hand. Édouard-Joseph writes in his Biographical Dictionary of Contemporary Artists about this work: “This pre-typographical incunabula , a true masterpiece of technique and feeling, recalling the most beautiful medieval creations, attracted the attention of scholars and publishers." To him we owe many engravings, views of Paris, watercolours , oil paintings, drawings, still lifes, landscapes of Yonne and Jura etc. He exhibited in 1933 at the Galerie Émile Martin. As a Member of the National Society of Fine Arts he exhibited mainly in Liège and Brussels . Vice-president of the Society of Original Engraving, a large part of his work is kept at the Carnavalet Museum . We can still see more of his works in the Museums of Rabat , Nantes , Tours , Tokyo and in private collections. A street in Dijon bears his name.
