"Winter landscape" Oil on card pasted on wood panel signed low left Old antique frame gilded with leaves Dim panel : 38 X 46 cm Dim frame : 54 X 62 cm MARONIEZ Georges Philibert (1865 – 1933) French painter (19th – 20th century) Born in Douai in 1865 Dead in Paris in1933 He studied to the Art school of Douai, and becomes in 1880 the pupil of Pierre Billet (1837-1922) then famous painter Jules Breton (1827-1906). He presents his first painting in Douai, then in 1887 in Paris “Setting Sun in Esquerchin “. On holiday in Wissant he discovers the landscapes of the littoral. He’s in Relationship with Adrien and Virginie Demont-Breton, Fernand Stiévenart, HenriDuhem, Félix Planquette. It is the time of the « Wissant group ». One will also speak about the “School de la Côte d’Opale”, including painters from Berck such as Tattegrain (1852-1915). Georges Maroniez becomes in 1889 member of the French Artists. He obtained a honourable mention in 1891 then two medals in 1905 and 1906. He is interested in photography and invents a camera (Sphynx) which it makes patent in 1891. He travels to the Mediterranean (North Africa, Italy, Palestine, Egypt…) from where he brings back many shots on glass plates. Mobilized in 1914, he is made chevalier de la légion d’honneur in July 1918.
