A charming village scene with figures, horses and other animals congregating around a village square. To the far left, a hay cart is being unloaded as children play marbles in the foreground. Meanwhile, figures on horseback wait their turn by a horse trough in front of villagers sat at a table. To the right, a wagon and horses are shown entering the village passing a group of figures and horses outside a thatched cottage. To the far right, an elderly couple sit on a log watching on as children buy apples from a seller.
Georgina Lara also known as Edwina Lara was a London painter of rustic farmyard and village scenes. Her work also closely resembles that of Edward Masters who also went by the name of William Masters. They are believed by many to be one in the same. However, there is evidence to suggest Lara was the pseudonym of Georgiana Laura Rogers who was related to the artists William Paul Lara (1827-1898) and Ernest William Lara (1858-1943).
Georgiana Laura Rogers was born in London on 17 July, 1828 and was the daughter of the artist William Paul Rogers (1801-1875) and sister of William Paul Lara (Rogers). She was listed as an artist in the 1851 census and at the time lived on Acton Street, St Pancras. In 1859, she married John Alexander McIntosh, a photographic artist. In the 1871 census she was recorded as living at 13 Chalk Farm Road, from where her husband ran a photographic studio. This was the same exhibition address listed as Lara’s from 1868. Her husband’s next business address was listed as 2 Prospect Terrace, which was also the last exhibition address for Lara. After her death in 1871, her brother William Paul Rogers changed his surname to Lara which may or may not have been related.
Lara made her debut at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1862, continuing to exhibit there until 1871. She also exhibited at the British Institution from 1863. Her exhibition addresses included 24, George Street, Euston Square, 32 Carlton Road Villas, Kentish Town, 13 Chalk Farm Road and 2 Prospect Terrace, Upper Holloway. Her paintings are full of charm, often containing groups of small figures and detailed buildings. Many of her works are also centred around villages or hamlets such as this lovely example.
Examples of her work are held by the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum.
Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

Georgina Lara
A painter of farmyard and village scenes, Georgina Lara exhibited at the British Institution as well as exhibiting 16 works at Suffolk Street. Very little is known about her life. Her work is sometimes attributed to Edward Masters, whose style is very similar to her own. Lara’s work is noted for large numbers of doll-like figures included in her paintings and setting them in country and village scenes, where they are going about their daily chores and duties. As a rural idyll we might all like to emulate today, the artist’s work remains very collectible.

19th Century genre painting of two women with flowers

Confidences
Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 40.75 inches x 27.75 inches
Size including frame: 47.75 inches x 34.75 inches
A delightful genre painting of two women with flowers by William Oliver. The young women can be seen in a garden setting posed next to an arrangement of spring flowers on a wooden stool. One of the women is shown seated on a grassy bank wearing a white dress with flowers in her hair. The other, dressed in green stands beside her holding a posy of flowers.
William Oliver was born William Oliver Williams at Worcester in 1823 to William and Jane Williams (née Oliver). Both his parents were from Wales but had relocated to Worcester where his father worked as a chemist before becoming a surgeon. Oliver showed a talent for art at an early age and when the family later moved to Birmingham he began working at the Government School of Design, where he later became the assistant master.
In 1848, he moved to London where he enrolled at the Royal Academy and was admitted to the RA school on 16 December, 1848. Whilst there, he married Jane Hughes on 30 December, 1852. The couple lived in St Pancras and went on to have 10 children. Two of their sons, William Oliver Williams, known as Oliver Rhys (1854-1907) and Reginald Arthur Williams or Reginald Arthur (1862-1899), also became artists.
Oliver began exhibiting in 1851 under his full name William Oliver Williams at the British Institution and in 1858 made his debut at the Royal Academy. He also exhibited around the country at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Glasgow Institute, Manchester Art Gallery and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. In the early 1850’s he won a commission from the Arundel Society to travel to Italy to draw Giotto’s fresco in Padua and other classical works. He later used his knowledge to incorporate Roman and Greek themes into his paintings, particularly fabrics and costumes.
Sometime during the early 1860’s he was declared bankrupt and moved his family to Corwen in Wales and later to Aberystwyth near to be closer to where his parents had retired. Perhaps prompted by this, he began signing his works William Oliver from 1867 and resumed exhibiting at the Royal Academy and elsewhere. By 1872, his circumstances had improved and he returned to London, residing in the St John’s Wood area. He spent his final years living at 41 Queens gate Gardens, Kensington where he died on 16 April, 1901.
Examples of his work are held by a number of public collections including the Aberystwyth University School of Art, Atkinson Art Gallery, Birmingham Museum, Bradford Museum, Kirklees Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, National Museum, Cardiff, Parc Howard Museum, Sewerby Hall Museum, Sheffield Museum, Stockport Heritage Services, Sunderland Museum, Thirlestane Castle and the Walker Art Gallery.

"Venetian Scene with Gondola" Colorful 20th Century Impressionist Oil Painting
Located in New York, NY
A charming Venetian scene with gondola oil on canvas painting by the French artist, Johanne Schiefer. This painting is a wonderful example of his work from the prime of his career. Here you see figures walking with gondolas and an abundance of color and life. The magic is being felt with all the magnificent details, as Schiefer captures the architecture of Venice so beautifully; you can feel the energy of the day and the excitement. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a gold tone carved wood frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.
Art measures 12 x 16 inches
Frame measures 16.5 x 20.5 inches
Johannes Schiefer was born in 1896 in the Netherlands, and quickly gained notoriety for his landscapes, still life’s and portraits. Schiefer won the Prix de Rome at the age of 19 and studied at the Düsseldorf Academy in Germany, and then moved to Paris where he continued his studies in art at the Beaux Arts, and later at the Villa Medici in Rome. He traveled to paint across Europe, primarily France and Italy and also Latin America.
When he married, he settled down in Nice France, and during the late thirties, he traveled and painted the coastline of the South of France, as well as Venice and the Adriatic. He remained in France until 1942, when he moved to New York with his family after the birth of their daughter, future actress Joanna Miles. Already an artist of stature when he arrived in New York, he settled with his family on Long Island, and for the next 30 years, Schiefer kept on painting and built a solid reputation as an important American artist. The Schiefers also had a son, Johannes Jr. After the war, Schiefer maintained a Paris studio and became a resident of Los Angeles for a time in the 1950s.
For the next 30 years Schiefer kept on painting and during his career had numerous one man shows, having exhibitions at: Gallery Zak in Paris; Kunsthaus in Hamburg; Kunsthalle in Munich; Stiebel Galleries in Paris; O'Connor Gallery in Ontario; Museum of Modern Art, Wildenstein & Co, Carol Carstairs Gallery and Schoeneman Galleries in New York City; Esther Robles Gallery, County Museum and Vigoveno Galleries in Los Angeles; and the San Francisco Museum.
Like Picasso, Schiefer never permitted himself to be “type-cast” in a single monotonous style. If there is anything that typifies his work, it is his versatility, his deft handling of subdued tones to create a unique brilliance of light and color that stamps every painting with his own individuality. In February 1964, Ethel Kennedy...
