Ger Stallenberg
Next Step- 21st Century Contemporary Colorful Landscape Painting

2016

About the Item

Artist Ger Stallenberg likes to get lost in his landscapes. The artist born in Maastricht (1959) studied at the Academy of Visual Education in Tilburg. Ger Stallenberg is inspired by symbolism and Art Nouveau art from around 1900. In that art you experience a supernatural dimension, and a great love for nature. A certain stylization, color palette and atmospheric light makes everything one unit. This can all be found in his paintings in a contemporary way. Ger Stallenberg remains so close to reality that fantasy worlds are avoided. The wonder of nature and life is always the subject of his paintings. The landscapes you see seem very realistically designed, the depth, the colors, plants, trees and vistas seem to really exist. Very special, however, is Stallenberg's technique, which only becomes visible after the work has been viewed a second time. Then it turns out that not only the realistic image is beautiful and appeals to the imagination, but also the way in which the paint is processed. It is not possible to explain in words how Stallenberg's technique gives beautiful effects in color, structure and suggestion. With an eye for detail and an elaborate layer over layer of technology, Ger Stallenberg tries to evoke an image that represents the mystery of existence. The more you look the more you see. The work offers the viewer every opportunity to dream away in order to evoke its own atmosphere. The particularly refined fabric expression and clear use of color give the work of Ger Stallenberg an enormous expressiveness that can be called timeless. The formats of the landscapes certainly participate in the expressiveness that the work has. Panoramic or square, small or large, there is always the tranquil beauty. My painting is an inquiry. I make images as a way of responding to experiences that are important to me. Experiences that help me to understand why I’m in this world often happens when I am outside in large open spaces. Painted images act as a tool. I respond to the spaces my art suggests. That response is usually non-verbal. I am interested in the experience of non-duality that “getting lost” in big spaces can sometimes produce for me. The paintings have gone through a range of artistic treatments with the recent years seeing a focus on space, light, textures, atmosphere and distance. My landscape paintings are made from memory, not from on-site drawings or photographs. I use memory as a filtering agent to remove non-essential visual elements. When a work is successful, it must have a sense of poetry. There is nothing “new...
