Grant Wood
The Young Artist

1926

About the Item

"The Young Artist" is an oil on panel painting made in 1926 by Grant Wood. The work is signed lower right, "Grant Wood". The painting size is 11 x 14 x 1 inches. The framed size is 20 1/4 x 23 1/2 x 4 inches. This work has a sterling provenance having been held in the family of the artist since its creation. The scholar Dr. Henry Adams has said this painting ranks as "among the very finest and most engaging early works" by Wood. Inclusion of debris in the paint indicates that the work was painted en plein air. This work was created while the artist was in his mid-30s, thus the title "The Young Artist" might be tongue-in-cheek. Painted in the fall of 1926, Wood had just returned from his final summer in Paris and had entered a mature period in his oeuvre. The soft brushstrokes in this work are reminiscent of his early impressionist style, but the stronger line work and geometry shows the development toward his mature style. Provenance: Grant Wood Private Collection Collection of his sister Nan Wood (American Gothic) Collection of Nan Wood’s Niece Collection of Nan Wood’s Grand Niece Literature: James M. Dennis, An Essay into Landscapes:The Art of Grant Wood, Kansas State University, 1972, p. 87, illustrated p. 92
