About the Item
The densely treed forest and mountain ledges of Hennen's Virginia home are the subject of this rich, highly detailed oil painting. A majestic boulder presides over a snowy grove of trees, its mass bisected by a dramatic ridge shadow. The trees are painted in shades of green, grey and brown and the snowy forest floor, in shadow, is bathed in pale blue. This painting is framed in a natural wood float frame. Signed, titled and dated by artist on the verso.
Although the artist names his paintings after places, his complex compositions are usually composites of several location sketches and visual memory, not exact reproductions of a specific place. A naturalist as well as a life-long painter, Hennen has a close relationship with his environment. On his daily walks he fills sketchbooks chronicling the land, the effect of passing light and the seasonal changes. From these many field sketches, a final sketch is used as a guide for rendering a drawing with graphite onto the 3/4 inch wood panel for a painting. By building up tens of thousands of small brush strokes, Hennen’s paintings are a complex collection of small marks gathered and made solid. The landscape paintings are at once astoundingly complex and perfectly calm. Hennen makes what can be described as ego-less paintings, perfectly crafted and stunningly beautiful; his paintings are a joy to experience.

- Field Painting August 24 2020, Flowers in Green Field, Trees, Late SummerBy Thomas SarrantonioLocated in Kent, CTA peaceful outdoor scene of a delicately painted field with pale lilac and white flowers beneath a tree with olive green leaves, beautifully capturing the idyllic feel of a field of wildflowers and tall grass in late August. Signed, dated and titled on verso. The paintings of Thomas Sarrantonio seek to mediate between realms of external perception and internal reflection. They present themselves as meditations on nature and self. Choosing humble, often overlooked subject matter, such as the overgrown grasses at the edge of a field, he attempts to translate the dynamic processes of Nature into the stasis of physical matter on a painted surface. Small works are produced directly from Nature while large paintings are studio productions that utilize memory, experience, imagination and conceptual ideas to negotiate the terrain of contemporary painting. The paintings are offered to the viewer as templates to provoke active participation in the process of seeing and quiet contemplation of the act of consciousness. Thomas Sarrantonio studied Painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia where his teachers included Wil Barnet and Sidney Goodman...Category
