About the Item

Oil on canvas, signed lower left. Measurements: Framed: 38" x 58" Unframed: 32" x 52" Provenance: JJ Patrickson and Son (label on reverse) The Englishman Fine Art, Naples, FL Gustave Castan (1823-1892) Gustave Castan was born on Christmas day in Geneva in 1823; he studied drawing at the Geneva Academy of Fine Arts and was later apprenticed to the studio of Alexandre Calame (1810-1864) who was at the time the most important artist in Geneva. As part of Calame’s entourage Gustav Castan travelled to Rome in 1845 to paint landscapes with his master. However, the pivotal moment in Castan’s life came in 1849 when he moved to Paris to join the burgeoning group of experimental landscape artists. Painting in the areas around Paris Castan began to be influenced by the work of Corot and he developed a calming and atmospheric style through his palette of green and silvery tones. Castan became a regular exhibitor at the Paris and Geneva Salons, by the end of his career he had become the president of the Geneva Society of Artists and was a frequent juror for the Geneva Salons. Today Castan’s work can be seen in many provincial cities in Europe including Geneva, Lille and Basel.
