About the Item
Hercules Brabazon Brabazon 1821-1906, was an English watercolour artist who painted in a manner similar to J M W Turner. He inherited the title of Baronet and this along with a large estate in Ireland supported his travel and art. He was a reluctant exhibitor and discarded many of his sketches in watercolour, his travelling companions would gather them up and hold them for later distribution. His reluctance to overcome the urge to exhibit was encouraged by his friend John Singer Sargent who persuaded him to show his works and unmistakeable talent. His first one man show was a sell out when he was in his seventies, most artists are exceedingly demanding to show their works but not Brabazon Brabazon, his wealth and love of painting sustained him throughout his life, the financial incentive was irrelevant. This watercolour painting is a very good example of his talent, he painted a large number of Venetian pictures but few as good as this.
