Hermann DELPECH Bordeaux, 1864 – Bordeaux, 1945 Oil on canvas laid down on cardboard 28 x 44 cm (31.5 x 47.5 cm with the frame) Signed lower right "H. Delpech". Very good condition
Born in Bodeaux in France, Hermann Delpech studied with Dupuis in Bordeaux before going to the School of Fine Arts in Paris with Gustave Boulanger, Jean Léon Gérome and also Léon Bonnat. He then exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1889 and also in Bordeaux, at the Society of Friends of the Arts and at the Atelier. Hermann Delpech was a painter of flowers, genre scenes and landscapes in the region of Bordeaux. Several of his paintings are in the Museum of Bordeaux and the Museum of Cognac.
The subject of our painting is original. It is probably an allegory of the sea and a shipwreck with Poseidon, the God of the sea, a castaway and the remains of a boat as well as a witness. It seems that the God of the Sea returns the castaway's body to the earth ! It's a vey nice painting with a beautiful light and manu nuances of blue and grey in camaieu. It may be a sketch for a larger painting to be exhibited in a Salon.
