About the Item

Waskes wonderful oil painting on cardboard depicts a sunset on the sea. The high waves convey movement in this picture. Six bright yellow birds are flying towards the orange red sky. The reflection of the orange sun in the water is marvellous. Signed and dated by E.Waske in the bottom right corner. ARTIST: Erich Waske (1889 - 1979) was one of the first german expressionists. He exhibited alongside Kirchner, Heckel, Pechstein, and Schmitt-Rottluff, and became famous as a member of the german artists organizations Berliner Sezession (Berlin Secession), Die Brücke (The Bridge), and Neue Berliner Sezession (New Berlin Secession). In 1931 the Berlin Secession featured the artist in an individual exhibition. Worthy of mention is that at this time Waske's pictures were worth more than those of his artistic colleagues. However, under National Socialism a great many of his works were destroyed, which accounts for his present day obscurity. Artist Encyclopedia from Thieme-Becker: "Waske is a marked color symphonist, whose flaming palette, tempered with a preference for orange and cadmium yellow and very rich in color, possesses an extraordinary power of impression. Likewise the skillful use of strong expression as well as range of color are integral parts of his work. There are also noticeable similarities to Schmidt-Rottluff in color and style." Waskes art can be understood as a "variation of the bridge. Formative to this concept is the author of the catalogue of works Erich Waske, Paintings and Monumental Designs (Berlin 1958), Will Grohmann. Erich Waske was represented by a picture of a harbor jetty in the Berlin National Gallery in 1931, after which a second acquired picture in 1937 was confiscated and destroyed by the National Socialists.
