About the Item
Signed lower left: "I.M.Gaugengigl". Label verso inscribed: "No. 185 Val. M. Plgr 1/07-21 / Artist: Gaugengigl, Ignaz Marcel / Title: An Italian Street / Owner: AAA". Pencil inscription verso: "J. Janjeau Class / [illegible]". Hastings & Davenport label on frame.
"An Italian Street" is related to a later etching entitled "The Stirrup Cup", c. 1887. The etching was exhibited at the New York Etching Club Exhibition, National Academy of Design, New York, Jan. 31 - Feb. 26, 1887. The plate reflects most of the architectural background of "An Italian Street" in reverse, but adds a number of figures in the foreground including a man on a horse drinking in front of the inn.
An oil painting by Gaugengigl also entitled "The Stirrup Cup" was exhibited at the Boston Art Club, April 16-May 8, 1880, #14. As Gaugengigl has been referred to as the “Messonier of America,” it is appropriate that Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (French, 1815-1891) painted a well-known version of the same subject in 1864.
Although "An Italian Street" is the model for the background in the painting The Stirrup Cup of c. 1880 and the etching, The Stirrup Cup of c. 1887, this painting, "An Italian Street", was probably done in Gaugengigl's last years in Europe, before his final move to Boston in 1880.
