Maria Cornelis, was born in the picturesque town of Berlicum, the Netherlands, on August 25, 1890. Isidorus van Mens was a true polymath of the art world. His talents spanned across various mediums, showcasing his mastery as a painter, draughtsman, lithographer, etcher, and wood engraver. He painted landscapes that captured the essence of nature’s beauty, figures that evoked deep emotions, and scenes from North African villages that transported viewers to distant lands. His works were a testament to his boundless curiosity and passion for the world around him. Despite being primarily self-taught, Isidorus sought guidance and support in the studio of Henk Meyer. This mentorship allowed him to refine his skills and hone his unique artistic vision. Isidorus’s wanderlust led him on numerous journeys to far-flung destinations. He was particularly drawn to North Africa, where he embarked on frequent trips between 1923 and 1959. In the villages of North Africa, he found endless inspiration in the landscapes, the people, and the mesmerizing play of light. His ability to capture the essence of these places and their inhabitants in his art was truly remarkable. Beyond North Africa, Isidorus explored the artistic landscapes of France, Spain, Bali, and China. His travels enriched his perspective and added depth to his artistic repertoire. Isidorus lived and worked in various cities, including Amsterdam, Utrecht, Zandvoort, Brussels and in 1921, in Chateau in Mons, Belgium. Each place left its mark on his art and contributed to the rich tapestry of his creative journey. The legacy of Isidorus Maria Cornelis van Mens lives on through his artwork, which can be found in both private and public collections, including the Museum of Brussels. His unique ability to capture the essence of the places he visited and the people he encountered continues to resonate with art enthusiasts worldwide. On July 5, 1985, Isidorus van Mens passed away in Oosterhout, North Brabant, leaving behind a lasting legacy that reminds us of the power of art to transcend time and place.

  • Vermillion at Lee's Ferry ( Plein Air Landscape painting sky blue terracotta)
    By Jane Chapin
    Located in Cody, WY
This is a 'Plein Air" landscape Painting by Jane Chapin as seen in the viewing room exhibition on Silas VON MORISSE GALLERY. “Plein-Air” is the French expression to describe the act of painting in situ within the landscape, capturing the ever changing weather and light with tonal qualities, colour, loose brushwork and softness of form... The practice of “Plein Air Painting” goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir who were advocating of plein air painting. Much of their work was done outdoors in the diffuse light of a large white umbrella. Another major proponent of Plein Air was Jean Baptiste Camille Corot whom Claude Monet considered as “The only One Master here”. Corot provides a transition from the sharp academic style that ruled in his day with focus on the natural world and the lyrical expressiveness of one's work. With her "Plein Air Paintings", Jane Chapin is part of one of the largest art movements in history. Her paintings carry human emotions. We can read her moods and feelings with places that carry deep remembrances for the artist that go beyond the descriptive. "My paintings grow from observing and interpretating light as it emerges from, surrounds and reflects on everyday people and scenes. They seek to remind us of the beauty of our common surroundings, regardless of where we are." - Jane Chapin Jane Chapin Painting the Land of the Free...
