Jacobus Cossaar
London St Paul's from the Thames - Impressionist 1920s landscape oil painting

Circa 1920

About the Item

This lovely large Impressionist view of St Paul's from the Thames is by Dutch artist Jacobus Cossaar who also worked under the name Ko Cossaar. It was painted during his eight years in England, circa 1920. The view is across the Thames from south bank to north and shows St Paul's cathedral dome and the tower of St Benet’s Church amongst other buildings. A stunning painting with lovely tones of white and grey of the Thames and buildings then the splash of the pink sails, again picked up in the sky and glow on buildings. Magnificent. St Paul's Cathedral is still a working church and a Grade I listed building. Dedicated to Paul the Apostle the church that can be seen today dates back to the late 17th century which, rebuilt after the Great Fire of London. St Paul's Cathedral is an internationally recognised landmark in the London skyline. Since 1937, the City of London Corporation has operated a unique policy known as the 'St Paul’s Heights' to protect and enhance important local views of the Cathedral from the South Bank, Thames bridges and certain points to the north, west and east. Signed lower right. Provenance. Sotheby's lot 247 11th April 1995. Remnants of Bourlet label verso. Condition. Oil on canvas, image is 36 inches by 28 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a fine Bourlet exhibition frame, framed size is 44 inches by 36 inches and in good condition. Jacobus Cornelis Wijnandus Cossaar (Amsterdam, August 8, 1874 – The Hague, November 25, 1966) was a Dutch painter working under the name Ko Cossaar. He was a member of the Pulchri Studio in The Hague. Cossaar grew up in Amsterdam and followed the education for stage decoration under August Allebe (1838-1927). Soon he painted the decors for the Plantage Schouwburg and got the leadership of the decorator from the seventeenth century. In 1906 he designed the decor for the tableaux vivants, which he collaborated with Marius Bauer (1867-1932). After moving to London with his wife and first daughter, he completed impressionist paintings of the city and port views. He got a contract with the renowned art dealership Goupil in London, which allows much of his early work in English museums and private collections to be found. He subsequently developed himself into a well-rounded painter known for his church and harbor scenes as well as landscapes. During his 8 years in England he painted numerous scenes in and around London and Yorkshire, including church settings and coastal landscapes. He went on to paint the most notable churches of France, Italy and Holland, using his sense of perspective learned while painting his early stage backdrops. He exhibited in the Netherlands, Paris, London and Berlin.
