Gerard Tunney, Night Dreamer, Original figurative painting

2021

About the Item

Gerard Tunney Night Dreamer Original Painting Sold Unframed A ballet figure suggested by a ballet suite of “A midsummer night’s dream” The figure rests during rehearsal and dreams of the ballet and the stage setting which overlap. Dancers often catnap where and when they can because of the punishing workload and schedule that they work to . The painting describes this in a stylized fashion. Ballet, Shakespeare, sleeping, dreaming, theatre, dancer, stage set Size: H:30 cm x W:40 cm. Artist Bio: He says "Most of my work is influenced by experiences of working in the theatre and I use theatre based subject matter as a source for my paintings ; this includes ballet, Shakespeare, poetry, myth. I am particularly interested in the theatres capacity to transform and change these subjects through the use of costumes, make-up, lighting etc. This creates all sorts of abstract possibilities within the work and is an endless source of fascination for me. The paintings can depict dancers going about their backstage routines or can be heightened by more theatrical subject matter, such as poetry and myth. I think that it is the diversity of the subject matter that attracts me the most and the fact that it never ceases to provide fresh source material for my work. Most of my paintings are acrylic on canvas which combines the spontaneity of watercolour with the sturdiness of oil paint. Acrylic dries fairly quickly which generates an immediacy within the work as it progresses. This way, the painting always retains the element freshness that I am trying to capture. Other paintings are oil on canvas which are glazed to try and achieve a rich jewel- like quality. These technical experiences have enabled me to participate in demonstration classes for various magazines, books etc. My work was further developed with a series of Fine Art Residencies with The Birimingham Royal Ballet; Opera North; Northern Sinfonia and I draws on these experiences to inform and enrich my paintings. I have been a professional fine artist since graduating from university in the mid 80's and I have supplemented my studio work through teaching and gallery work. I have shown widely across the U.K. particularly the North-East and London.

By Isabel Rock
Located in Norfolk, GB
Isabel Rock is a creator of contemporary fairy tales. A graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, her work is an explosion of strange occurrences while a surreal narrative takes the audience on a journey into the imagination. In October 2023 Isabel won the Evelyn Williams Drawing Award at the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize. Known as the UK’s most prestigious annual open exhibition for drawing; part of the prize is a solo show at Hastings Contemporary, scheduled for 2024. Artwork Details: Best Day Ever, 152x122cm, Collaged woodblock print, acrylic ink on Somerset satin paper, 2023 Artwork Provenance: from the Artist Studio photo credits, Isabel working, black and white shots, James Brown In Isabel's own words: Best Day Ever; It was the best day ever. Just one of those days when everything goes right and the world is an exciting place. The very pavements seemed to be alive with magical stories to tell of the many feet that had trampled upon them. Everything seemed right with the world because I was going to meet my friend for a glass of wine. You know that friend who just gets you? Who you don't have to explain everything too, and they laugh in all the right places. I was going to meet that friend and have a glass of wine and everything else could wait. It really was the best day ever. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube. Whilst the work is on heavy duty art paper and mixed media, the artist is happy that the painting will be fine rolled in a tube. This is a more cost effective and environmentally sound method of shipping. Shipping via this method is free. About Isabel Rock and her work: Taking inspiration from Japanese woodblock prints and Indian miniature painting Rock has developed a unique collage technique that combines bold structures with large-scale woodblock prints and intricate detailing. The subject is a grand mixture of humour, drama, hidden morals, fanciful characters, modern culture, mythical beings and fantastical situations. Rock creates a world that pulls you in and demands your attention. Quality of line is paramount, the drawings are created using a dipping pen and acrylic ink. An essential tool is a squirrel...

Artwork Details: Call of the Sea, 122 x 152cm, Collaged woodblock print, acrylic inks on Somerset satin paper, 2023 Artwork Provenance: from the Artist Studio photo credits, Isabel working, black and white shots, James Brown In Isabel's own words: Call of the Sea: The sea was calling, calling its sirens song. It threw tempting little waves flirtatiously on the shore. 'Come,' it said, 'come.' The sea glittered with promise, it whispered sweet nothings as it rolled the tiny gem pebbles on the beach. 'Come to me,' it said, 'I will show you the world, the true meaning of life.' The people felt the pull, the blood pumping in their veins, like a magnet they were drawn towards the sea. Mesmerised, bewitched, they stripped of their clothes, leaving them in molehills on the beach. The breeze caressed bare bottoms, free from the constraints of life. They stepped cautiously at first but as excitement overwhelmed them they broke into a run as they neared the water. The sea tickled their toes and beckoned them in, making sweet promises of delightful pleasures. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube.
