Jill Pottle
"Fairfield Porter's Compound", interior, vibrant, high chroma, oil painting

2018

About the Item

Jill Pottle’s interior titled “Fairfield Porter’s Compound” is part of a new series titled “Interior.” Jill started interiors four years ago and tries to capture the natural light pouring in and often times engages the outside world thru screen views. In this 16 X 20 inch oil painting on a primed canvas, the paint is rich, loose and vibrant. Her painting technique is similar to working en plein air, she captures the moment in time with her keen observations of light and drama. Spontaneously she captures the atmosphere, emotion, bold concepts and high chroma to create movement around the canvas. The stretched canvas is ready to hang with painted edges. Known for her complicated and engaging still life and loose plein air work, Jill Pottle is a New Realist painter from Worcester County. Her aim is to capture movement and emotional qualities in her canvases. In her still life paintings, she most often uses retro or well-worn ordinary objects that focus attention on life in our contemporary world. In her landscapes, she freezes a moment in time to exemplify the power of the life force in nature. Rich brush work and high chroma characterize her fluid painterly style in both areas of subject matter. The play of light on different surfaces and the layering of paint create depth and resonance in her work. Pottle is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.

  • May 27 (8.59pm) - Road landscape painting
    By Edie Nadelhaft
    Located in East Quogue, NY
Landscape painting, evening road scene titled "May 27 (8.59pm)" by Edie Nadelhaft - oil on canvas, 36 x 48 inches Edie Nadelhaft's paintings focus on the visual nuances and psychological ambiguity of twilight. No people are pictured, but each composition preserves some residue of the human presence, depicting desolate stretches of rural highway, some capped by an apocalyptic canopy of clouds. Rendered in a manner best described as Perceptual Realism, Nadelhaft draws the viewer into the scene, showing just as much - or as little - sharp detail as a human eye can process in person. The point of view and style of painting takes into account the fleeting nature of impressions, especially those formed while driving in low light on unfamiliar roads. In some scenes, light is greatly diminished, but it is not quite dark enough to reap the full benefit of headlights. Buildings, trees and power lines appear and disappear in a murky, shimmering haze; nighttime is fluid, rife with intrigue and for some, even dread. But the dark can also provide a portal to the imagination, opening up new possibilities and potential. And for the artist, it brings an overwhelming sense of wonder and relief. The night - especially traveling at night - offers protection, a respite, like a spell that conjures a brief suspension of responsibility and time as one hurtles through space fully enveloped in the totality of that experience. Realism, landscape painting, landscape, night scape...
