About the Item

This marvelous vintage American Impressionist painting (Circa 1925) titled "Rockport", by the noted Ohio artist, John Ellsworth Weis (1892-1962), depicts a hilltop view of Rockport Harbor on an idyllic sun drenched summer day. It features lovely jewel tone color mixtures of blue, red, yellow, green, brown and pink, masterfully executed in lush painterly brushwork; a technique exemplified by his mentor, the luminary American artist, Frank Duveneck. This stunning and rare gem features an especially excellent vintage 1920s genuine carat gold leaf frame, so complimenting the painting. The painting measures 20" High x 22" Wide ( Framed ) John Ellsworth Weis became a star pupil of the esteemed Frank Duveneck at The Art Academy of Cincinnati, beginning his studies there in 1906 at the tender age of 14, and joining the faculty himself at age 22. In the 1920s, he traveled to Europe where he exhibited at the Paris Salon, accompanied by his talented student, Frank Harmon Myers. He remained a venerable teacher at The Art Academy of Cincinnati for 38 years and exhibited widely throughout his career, perhaps most notably at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Annual in 1925, 1926, 1927, 1930 and 1933; The Art Institute of Chicago in 1926, 1928, and 1930; and at the Corcoran Gallery biennials in 1928 and 1932 John Ellsworth Weis "Rockport" Oil on Board Circa 1925 20" High x 22" Wide ( Framed ) 14" High x 16" Wide ( Unframed ) Signed J.
