About the Item

Contemporary acrylic painting on canvas by sought after and beloved Scottish artist Jolomo, (John Lowrie Morrison, 1941 -), this painting is signed and dated 2005 by the artist. The title 'Evening Light', location and date are handwritten verso, and numbered 16625 with the artist's name. Jolomo is renowned for painting humble crofts and coastlines from the west of Scotland and islands in brilliant color. This is a good example of his work with marine blue skies, red roofs, white houses and orange landscapes. His subjects are from rural Scottish life in vivid hues, using key color particularly blue, in contrast to the often grey skies and rainy days. The Isle of Mull is represented here, off Breadalbane Street with the row of white houses and chimneys and an old red phone booth. Titled 'Evening Light' Jolomo often chooses early evening light with the darkening blue skies and the last golden light casting fire color on the landscape. Jolomo is one of the most popular artists in modern Scotland. A former educator he turned to full time painting later in life and has become a successful painter and philanthropist. He has donated numerous paintings to good causes, earning him recognition with the British Order of the Empire (OBE) Award, an Honorary Doctorate and local acclaim. He grew up in Glasgow, studied at the Glasgow School of Art, undergraduate and postgraduate, then became an arts educator and a Principal Teacher of Art and Design in Argyll, and a teacher in Strathclyde region. His first exhibition was in 1976, and Jolomo became a highly successful artist painting the west of Scotland for fifty years. Jolomo's work is exhibited in Scottish galleries and the Scottish Parliament. 'Evening Light' is in excellent condition, presented in a wide silver toned contemporary frame. In the frame the painting is 20.5 by 20.5 inches square. The canvas sight is 12 by 12 inches square. Jolomo's paintings remains one of the most collectable arts in Scotland.
