This realist painter and graphic artist first attended Hamilton College (B.A., 1953), where he was awarded full scholarships to both the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and to Boston University, where he received his Masters in Fine Art in 1958.
John Semple has exhibited widely and with success, including at the San Diego Print Show (1995), deCordova and Dana Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Pasadena Art Center and with New York's Audubon Society of Artists. He is the recipient of numerous medals, prizes and juried awards, including First Prize from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant, which Semple used to study abroad in Italy, France and Britain (1958). Among other distinctions, he has received the American Artist Award from the Lafayette Art Association, the Grumbacher Gold Medal from the Allied Artists of America (1987) and the first place prize from the Cape Cod Art Association (1996). Semple is a member of the Boston Printmakers, Society of American Graphic Artists, the Print Club of Albany, Allied Artists of America, Audubon Artists and the Los Angeles Printmaking Society. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the University of Wisconsin and the Print Club of Albany among others.
