A picturesque 19th-century rural scene by listed British artist, John Westall (1823-1894).
Little is known about this prolific self-taught landscape painter due to his often reclusive nature. It is clear, however, that he travelled around Britain and had a fondness for capturing idyllic countryside scenes, often with figures.
This charming and atmospheric oil on canvas is a good example of his work, an idyllic riverside scene with a small gypsy camp in the woodland
