John Whorf
Summer Storm

About the Item

A dark gouache painting of figures racing for cover from a summer storm by American artist John Whorf (1903-1959). Whorf was born in Winthrop, Massachusetts and by the age of sixteen, he had begun studies in Provincetown with George Elmer Browne and Charles Webster Hawthorne who were, unarguably, the two formative teachers in Whorf's life. During his many visits to Paris, Whorf enhanced his training at Ecole Colarossi, Academie Julian, Ecole des Beaux Arts, and Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. He went on to hold over 32 annual exhibitions in Boston, but still traveling worldwide, with his focus changing from oil painting to watercolor in the 1920’s. He became known for his street landscapes, marine, and figure painting, receiving many honors and awards over his career, including he Logan Medal, awarded by the Art Institute of Chicago in 1928, and his honorary Master of Arts degree awarded by Harvard University in 1938, Whorf being the first contemporary painter to be so recognized. That same year, Whorf was one of only two Boston artists to be selected by the Museum of Modern Art for its exhibition in Paris. The following year, the Art Institute of Chicago again honored Whorf with a special exhibition of his watercolors, alongside collections by Edward Hopper and Henri Matisse. In 1947, Whorf was elected to the National Academy of Design and, in 1948, to the American Watercolor Society. Watercolor on paper, signed lower right (under mat), matted and framed under glass in a molded giltwood frame. Minor edge loss under the mat. Dimensions: 15.5 in H x 22 in W, sight; 24.5 in H x 30.5 in W x 1.25 in D, framed.

  • Mid Century Tonalist Landscape of California Country Road
    Located in Soquel, CA
Beautiful tonalist landscape of California foothills and country road. Signed and dated "CKP" and "'69" lower right corner. Presented in rustic wood frame with eggshell mat under nonglare glass. Image size: 18.25"H x 13.25"W. Framed size: 23.5"H x 18"W. California Tonalism was art movement that existed in California from circa 1890 to 1920. Tonalist are usually intimate works, painted with a limited palette. Tonalist paintings are softly expressive, suggestive rather than detailed, often depicting the landscape at twilight or evening, when there is an absence of contrast. Tonalist paintings could also be figurative, but in them, the figure was usually out of doors or in an interior in a low-key setting with little detail. Tonalism had its origins in the works of the French Barbizon school and in the works of American painters who were influenced by them. California Tonalism was born when the emphasis in California landscape painting passed from the grand landscapes of works like those of Thomas Hill and William Keith's early career, to more intimate views of a domesticated landscape. At the same time, the parallel Pictorialist Photography...
