John Wolfe
'Church, Dilia New Mexico, ' by John Wolfe, Acrylic on Birch Painting

2018

About the Item

In this New Mexico landscape by John Wolfe, 'Church, Dilla, New Mexico,' a stark, primitive church with steeple is seen from its side with two arched windows, handicap ramp and propane gas tank. The white stuccoed church is set against a bright blue cloudless sky with pink/orange reflections of the sun and the orange dirt on the ground. The sun's reflection and shadows are prominent against the surface of the church. John Wolfe is originally from Davidson, Oklahoma having graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a degree in Art Education and a M.Ed. from the University of Central Oklahoma. John taught art in public schools for 35 years and was an adjunct art faculty at Rose State College and Adams State University. John’s work has been exhibited extensively across Oklahoma and the surrounding region at venues including the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, the Philbrook Museum of Art, the Oklahoma State Capitol, the Hot Springs National Park Sculpture Invitational and the National Weather Center Biennale. Since his retirement from teaching in 2005 he is a full-time studio artist painting and sculpting. His most recent series of acrylic paintings are architectural in nature and his current focus is a new group of figurative mixed-media sculptures.

The straight lines and precise angles in his paintings might be found in math, architecture, and industry more readily than in grassy meadows or dense forests. But relying solely on this sort of metonymy is limiting. A more nuanced read reveals some of Middlebrook’s geometric patterns are also inspired by nature. Crystals and geodes...
