Oil on canvas Signed "Royo" lower right Image: 20 x 20 inches Royo was born in Valencia, Spain in 1945. He studied at the renowned Escuela Superior de Artes de San Carlos in Valencia. Additionally, as an artistic prodigy, he studied privately with the famous painter Adolfo Ferrer Amblat, a senior lecturer at the San Carlos Fine Arts School. Royo made a special study of late 18th Century and early 19th Century painting. These studies resulted in a commission for restoration work on the Palace of the Marquis of Dos Aguas in Valencia. Beginning in 1982, he took part in numerous local, regional and national Spanish competitions and events in Spain. He was the recipient of numerous prizes, which helped in the launching of his career. Royo initially exhibited a body of work that would be classified as “Expressionist,” with forms being rendered in strong chiaroscuro with profuse texturing. Beginning in 1972, a change occurred, as his style moved in the direction of Impressionism. Eventually, he created a distinct and easily identifiable style, which led him to great success as one of the leading figures of the “Mediterranean School.” Early on, Royo’s work was represented by major galleries in Spain, which then led to shows in London and Paris. Those were soon followed by highly successful exhibitions throughout Europe, Japan and the United States. Most recently, there have been critically lauded installations at the prestigious Museo Almudin in Valencia, Spain, a 15th century structure that is considered a national monument, and the Palau de la Musica. Royo’s great skill as a draughtsman has earned him prestigious commissions, including portraits of King Juan Carlos of Spain and Queen Sofia. He has also painted portraits of the Presidents and the Supreme Court of Spain, as well as celebrated bullfighters and other important figures. In recent years, he has confined portraiture to the royalty of Spain. Juan Antonio Clavero made a full-length film about Royo’s life and work. The film, entitled “Royo, Vida y Obra” was awarded First Prize at the Festival of Specialized Cinema in Spain.
