About the Item

Juan Bautista Porcar (1889-1974) - Impressionist landscape - Oil Oil measurements 15x23 cm. Frame measurements 29x37 cm. Juan Bautista Porcar Ripollés (Castellón de la Plana, April 8, 1889 - Castellón de la Plana, October 3, 1974) was a Spanish painter. He was born into a humble family of farmers. Until the age of 17, he alternated agricultural work with artistic tasks. His first pictorial training was received from the Castellón painter Vicent Castell. In 1906 the Castellón Provincial Council granted him a scholarship to study sculpture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia. From 1910 to 1914 he lived in Barcelona, where he came into contact with artistic bohemianism related to modernity, at the same time that he began to abandon sculpture to dedicate himself fully to painting. In 1915 he returned to Castellón and founded the “Ribalta” group, focused on natural landscape painting. His first individual exhibition was held in Barcelona in 1927. He then alternated exhibitions in Spain with his participation in international competitions (Venice, Oslo, Paris, Buenos Aires). His greatest success was achieved in 1954, when he obtained the first medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, which is why, in his later years, he enjoyed prestige. He had numerous disciples who imitated his style. When at the end of his years, a Valencian art dealer wanted to buy all of his work, Porcar refused, replying ironically: When I was hungry in my childhood I would have wanted them to buy me some paintings, but now I no longer need to sell them. His favorite themes were nens (children resting or playing games), portraits, cave paintings and, above all, landscapes. In line with evolved realism, Porcar's landscapes are distinguished by the right proportion of light, the narrowness of the horizons compared to the breadth of the skies, the loose brushstrokes and the affection for the land in the chosen themes (pine forests, marshes, level crossings, port scenes).
