About the Item
The painting brings to the viewer a quiet scene not atypical of tropical areas where palm trees grow. Different shades of green predominate, some intensified by the oil medium used. Dappled light falls on some of the palm trunks, highlighting their texture and providing some contrast. The artist has also painted the wood frame green, so that boundaries are mixed. Her name is shown on the left hand side of the work.
Born in the Dominican Republic, Julia Santos Solomon emigrated to the USA at ten and was educated at the Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University. For a period, she taught in DR at Altos de Chavon Foundation, thus influencing a new generation of artists. With a studio in the Hudson Valley, she exhibits often in NYC; her work is in several permanent collections.
