Kay Flierl has immersed herself in the creative world for over 35 years. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Design, then moved into a career in advertising and graphic design. But there was always a voice inside that called for a deeper expression. Eventually she listened to that voice and taught herself to paint. It is in this realm that Kay has found her truest expression. Although self-taught, she observes and learns through exploration and inspiring fellow painters, but primarily listening to that voice with a passion that carries her forward. Kay has lived in the mid-west, the south and the west, currently living life to its fullest in Denver, CO. Each place has infused its unique culture and environment into the person and artist she is today. "What propels me to paint?" Kay says. "Cezanne says it best... 'Emotion is the starting point the beginning and the end.' I have an equal appreciation for abstract and representational art, but in each finished canvas, I see the emotion felt while creating it. It’s a place to process life. And I passionately embrace the unique ability of an artist to put emotion into a visual context. For me, it is expressed through texture, color, pattern, beauty, playfulness and subject matter. While emotion drives the process, the inspiration for each piece comes from my love of life, the outdoors and all that God has created. "In creating art, there is a time when I enter into a stage of unknowing. Where immediate answers are intangible and I must rest in the silent darkness. Not sure where to go or even if any path will push me forward. This is a crucial period when creativity flourishes in the questioning more than the certainty, preparing me for a new depth of creativity. Each blank canvas holds the promise of a new journey, drawing me back to create again and again." • Channel. 1965, canvas, oil, 80x100 cm
    By Jadviga Zjilvinska
    Located in Riga, LV
Channel. 1970, cardboard, oil, 108x73 cm Jadviga Žilvinska (1918-2010) was born in Tallinn. She grew up in Liepāja, where her great interest in art began and strengthened, which led the young artist to study at the Art Academy of Latvia. During her studies at the Academy, she studied with K. Ubāns, V. Tone and J. Liepiņš, and defended her diploma thesis under the guidance of L. Liberts. Later on, she devoted her entire life to art, working at the Liepāja School of Fine Arts and as a portraitist at the "Māksla" combine. She had four favourite themes: landscapes, portraits, flowers and sacred painting. Her works have lyricism and inner harmony. In the portraits, we see not only the outer form of a person, but the artist allows us to look into the very essence of a person - it is likely that the models themselves often saw something new and bright in themselves through the artist's vision. The works are executed in various techniques - tempera, oil, pastel and watercolour. CV: 1938 - Graduated from the Liepaja Secondary School of Applied Arts, Department of Decorative Painting. 1943 - Latvian Academy of Art, L. Liberts Figurative Painting Workshop with her diploma work "At the Artist's" 1946-1948 - teacher of painting and drawing at Liepāja Fine Arts High School. 1948-1966 - portraitist at the "Māksla" combine Participated in exhibitions since 1948.
