About the Item

"Casting 'Mood'" is part of a group of works that the Belgian painter Koen van den Broek (*1973 in Bree, Belgium) painted after photographs that he took during extensive walks with his Scottish collie through the landscape surrounding his house in Schilde near Antwerp, Belgium. Accordingly, in "Casting 'Mood'" we see no American city view or landscape, no desert, no motorway bridge, no street border, nor any other of the typical scene that we know from his œuvre. Rather, van den Broek paints his homeland: a field or meadow, a forest, in short: a cultural landscape of the European West. The center of the painting is dominated by a plant that structures the picture surface and defines left and right, as well as foreground and background. Also, the palette chosen by van den Broek is special. The colors are subdued, the light predominantly diffuse, as if the sun was seldom shining in Belgium. The leaves of the plant are yellow with black spots, showing signs of decay, as if they fell off with the next gust of wind. With its reddish shoots, the plant – on the other side – looks like plant depictions in Art Nouveau style and with their fleshiness it also has an erotic side, like limbs in nudes from the oeuvre of Egon Schiele or Gustav Klimt. All in all, the work is permeated by a moment of melancholy and fragility. van den Broek thus sets a signal for the finiteness of our existence. In contrast, the earlier works, especially the typical border motifs, stand for permanence and strenght. With a work like "Casting 'Mood'", however, van den Broek by no means denies his pictorial-conceptual past. The interest in the photographic gaze and thus also the interest in relating the two media, or as a painter in dealing with the medium of photography, remain. The composition of the image continues to be determined by photography; the compositional decisions are made with the selection of the photographs. Yet van den Broek achieves a very special, mature mood. He is no longer the adventurer „on the road“ who drives through the American West with loud music in his car and tries to capture the sublime of this landscape in his paintings. Rather, he is a man who has learned to enjoy his home and who can see the beauty in the little things, like – for instance – a plant. Koen van den Broek graduated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Before, he had studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Breda and the HISK in Antwerp. He is looking back to a successful, international career, being active since more than 20 years. His major solo-exhibitions were "This an Example of That", with works done by Koen van den Broek together with John Baldessari, in the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht (2008); "Curbs and Cracks" in the SMAK (City Museum of Contemporary Art), Ghent (2010); and "Shadows" in the Museo Alto Garda, Riva del Garda (2012). His paintings have been collected by basically every major Belgian collection (institutional as well as private), as well as by the Philara Collection, Dusseldorf; the Stoffel Foundation, Cologne; Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe; the Collection G2, Leipzig; the LACMA, Los Angeles; the Astrup Fearnley Museet for Moderne Kunst, Oslo; the Kadist Art Foundation, Paris; the Samsung Museum of Modern Art, Seoul; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
