Larisa Aukon
Walk Lightly on Your Way

c. 2013

About the Item

"Walk Lightly on Your Way" is one of the largest works Larisa completed in her career. The color layering is exemplary and the painting is defined by a strong "s" shaped composition which is what drew Larisa to this scene. This is an oil painting on canvas, stretched on wooden stretcher bars. Currently unframed. Larisa was an important painter who lived the last twenty years of her life in Arizona. She was very popular nationally and was a well-known teacher. The body of work she left behind in private collections is significant in its quality, uniqueness and identifiable style. A secondary market for this artist who passed away in 50's in 2018 is already starting to unfold. “My goal as a painter is to infuse nature around me with spiritual qualities. Everything I observe, whether it is a tree, building, mountain, flower or rock is alive to me. I want to show more than just the obvious beauty in them. I want to show their spiritual nature and how they all combine in harmony. I sometimes carry my initial images with me for months or even years before it becomes a painting. The excitement is the moment I catch the idea!” Over the 20+ years Latvian-born painter Larisa Aukon lived in the United States, she established herself as an accomplished painter and teacher. Larisa’s education and natural talents allowed her to create masterfully-mixed and layered palettes, supported by a framework of balanced compositions. She filled her canvases with bold strokes of rich pigment, capturing the ever changing hues of natural light. Colors from the first layers seep through subsequent layers, creating the depth of brilliance that became her trademark. Aukon received her initial art training at a prestigious Art School for gifted children in her native Latvia. To be accepted, she had to pass extensive academic and art exams. Very few applicants were accepted. She had a full academic curriculum and up to 20 art lessons per week from the time she was 12 until graduation. Larisa was then accepted to the Latvian State Academy of Fine Arts, graduating with her masters. Larisa lived and worked in Arizona for the last 20 years of her life. Sadly, she passed away after a sudden illness in 2018. Her popularity has continued after her death with a strong secondary market evolving for her paintings. She’s featured in magazines; Southwest Art, American Art Collector, Cowboys & Indians, Phoenix Home & Garden and a book, Contemporary Art of The Southwest.  Her works are in private and corporate collections throughout the world.

Febland always works in rich dramatic narratives that are timeless and yet of this time. Timeless, because human narratives have remained relatively consistent throughout our time here and certainly of this time in regard to his choice of subject matter. This piece, a comment on the "Millennial." The piece feels somewhat lude, in nature. A scantily clad woman walking down the street. Unique hair, nails, tattoos, and clothes that draw attention. The shoulder strap fallen down as if to reference Sargent's "Madame X," a scandalous piece in 19th century Paris. She is in public, grasping her lifeline to the world, the cellphone. Yet she feels isolated and perhaps lost. The rickshaw's in the background as metaphorical guides to an unknown destination, yet she pays them no mind...
