Lumi Mizutani
New York Landscape - The High Line IV by Lumi Mizutani - Japanese style painting

2022

About the Item

New York Landscape - The High Line IV is a unique diptych painting by contemporary artist Lumi Mizutani. The painting is made with pigments, Indian ink, silver leaf and black leaf on Japanese paper mounted on panel, dimensions are 65.2 × 100 cm (25.7 × 39.4 in). The artwork is signed, sold framed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. The artist sublimates these locations through her paintings, changing the times and seasons in each of her multiple representations. Nature and trees are highly valued by the artist, as evidenced by the cherry and plum blossoms, pines, and weeping willows depicted in her works. In this piece, the berries are the only subjects with their bright red colour standing out from the white background. The background was created by the artist using black (burnt) silver leaf, which she later covered with white to bring out the colour while maintaining a textured relief. Lumi Mizutani works on the alchemy between different elements she uses: paper, ink and water. Through the magic play of the materials, Lumi invites the viewer to enter the world of her artworks full of emotion. The artist juggles with the codes by using traditional techniques, on the one hand, and permanently reinventing with her own techniques, on the other.

This large painting is Mitsumori's very first maiden work. An original mineral painting, made with 24k gold, crushed minerals (natural and synthetic), oyster shells and gold-coated mica on Japanese paper mounted on a wood panel. Natural colors include precious and semi-precious stones. Because these substances consist of unique chemical and physical properties, every artwork has unique characteristics and a story to tell, with a sense of connection to the earth. It is highly textured with a matt and rich sand-like appearance. What originally inspired her to paint was the cityscapes of Jaisalmer. Jaisalmer is a city in India known as the “golden city” that gleams in gold-like colors at sunset. The city shimmered like a piece of gold jewelry, reminding her of jewelry that retains its shine even after a thousand years. She felt a strong desire to capture them in paintings and set out to do so. Presents the sceneries seen through her eyes in an art form. In mint condition, Certificate of Authenticity included and calligraphy seal in front, hand-signed at the back. Sold unframed and ready to hang (eye bolt and string mounted at the back).
