French Oil on Canvas Post-Impressionist Painting "Street Scene," by Michel Dureuil, 1948. A fine and early painting by Michel Dureuil depicting a Parisian street scene, a gentleman crossing the street with a horse and cart in the foreground. Signed "M. Dureuil 48" to the lower right.
Michel Dureuil 1929-2011) was a French painter of the New School of Paris, he was born in Paris and painted extensively in and around Antibes during the 1950s and 1960s. He exhibited at Arthur Tooth in London and studied at the Ecole de Beaux Arts, often using high viewpoints and bright sunlight to enhance the shapes and colours of the boats in the harbor. His work appears on the international markets regularly throughout Europe, but also in London and New York. As a child Dureuil had demonstrated great ability in drawing and produced sketchbooks of Paris under the German occupation. He initially studied at the Professional Design School located at rue Saint-Maur in Paris, 11th arrondissement, he then entered the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts where he joined the studio of Jean Dupas and studied with many of the most celebrated French artists of the post war period, including Jean-Pierre Alaux, Paul Collomb, Paul Ambille and Oliver Pettit, to name just a few. He was introduced to the gallery owner Etienne Sassi and frequently exhibited at his gallery, he later received patronage from the couturier, Edward Molyneaux, allowing him to travel and paint throughout Europe, the West Indies, and North Africa. Dureuil's works are to be found in many galleries in Europe and the United Kingdom and in the collections of the National School of Fine Arts, Paris.
