Michele Kishita
Edging toward Spring: abstract Japanese inspired landscape w/ gold, blue & green

2021

About the Item

Michele Kishita's contemporary abstract landscape paintings on wood panel collectively describe the calm and fluidity of bodies of water at specific moments of the day; the new growth of spring; the pale freeze of mid-winter; and the interplay of light, shadow, and speed recalling movement through the urban landscape. Stylistically, Kishita’s work is deeply influenced by the strong lines and compressed space of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints, particularly the landscapes and natural world imagery of Hiroshige and Hokusai. In addition to creating her own work, Kishita is a Japanese print consultant who authenticates, translates, and appraises woodblock prints. This painting is signed, dated, and titled on the back. It is complete with all installation hardware and ready to hang. No need for additional framing. Kishita received her MFA and BFA degrees from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. She has held artist residencies in Iceland, Russia, and New Mexico, and her work has been featured in exhibitions across the US, in Russia, and in the United Arab Emirates. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of Toyota, Kaiser Permanente, Park Towne Place, Temple University, Drexel University, Texas Tech University, the University of the Arts. Kishita maintains a studio in Philadelphia, PA.

    By Kyoung Mi Lee

This is a beautiful, quiet and deeply contemplative piece from a Korean artist based in America, Kyoung Mi Lee (Lee Kyoungmi) The oil painting is on a specially constructed 3D birch wood panel to create a sensory visual effect, almost like looking through the looking glass. The centerpiece of the painting depicts a beautiful little park in Germany, near her home in Germany where Kyoung Mi lived for a spell. Due to work, Kyoung Mi has lived in various countries and whilst she loved her new homes, there is a sense of displacement and not belonging. This perhaps reflects the truth for many of us who travel and live in different places, moving away from home for work, love or simply to seek a new or different life. As such, the Greek torso...
