"Women's Ceremony' Australian Aboriginal Art by Mitjili Napurrula

About

Mitjili began painting in the early 1990s with the Ikuntji Art Centre located in Haast Bluff, later moving to Mt Leibig. She is famous for her large patterned pieces depicting Waitiya Tjuta, a native Australian plant which is used in traditional scenarios by men to make spears. Waitiya Tjuta is also depicted in a dreaming story Mitjili inherited from her father’s county of Illyingaungau in the Gibson Desert south of Kintore. This site was were Naparulla’s ancestors assembled their Kulata (spears) for a conflict with the Tjula men. The signature abstract forms directly reveal a separate yet interdependent relationship between men and women’s ceremonies. Mitjili was born and married into a significant community of leading aboriginal artists. She was wed to the late Long Tom Tjapanangka, who famously won the Telstra award in 1999. Between Long Tom and Mitjili, their work is understood as archetypal of Ikuntji Art. Mitjili was also the half sister to Turkey Tolson, a renowned artist who was integral to the genesis of the Papunya Tula Art movement. Mitjili experienced first hand the origin of this important moment in Australian art history through the artistic contribution made by her family members. This first hand experience translated and influenced her practice as an artist in later years.
