Nancy Hughes Miller
Marsh Creek Clouds, Oil Painting

2023

About the Item

Artist Comments
Artist Nancy Hughes Miller features one of her favorite views—a tranquil marsh. She pictures the scene from a kayak along the wetlands of her North Carolina coastal home. Slow-moving purple-blue water flows with the tides between bright yellow-green grasses as colorful wispy clouds drift by overhead. “While maneuvering the marsh creeks, ideas for paintings pop into my head,” says Nancy. “In the canoe, I feel connected to the water, land, and sky.”

About the Artist
Reflected in Nancy Hughes Miller’s paintings are the coastal and rural environments of southeastern North Carolina, her birthplace, where she still spends much of her time. As a child, Nancy’s primary education did not include art classes, so she was delighted when one day her oldest brother returned home from college with newsprint and charcoal. She went on to pursue a career path in graphic design and fine arts. Now a full-time artist, Nancy experiments with vibrant colors and fluid forms to create her non-traditional, painterly landscapes. She enjoys working with oils, a medium that dries slowly and lends itself nicely to blending. Nancy strives to produce artwork that is, according to her, “quiet, yet bold.”
