About the Item
The memories of his time in Brazil are Nicholas Broughton’s inspiration for his unique ‘Favela’ series. A favela is the Brazilian equivalent of a shanty town which is generally found on the edge of the city and often on very steep slopes. Nicholas creates his ‘Favela’ series using a base of bitumen to heighten the contrast of colors and textures. Gold leaf is a regular addition to the windows which gives the effect of lights being turned on or off depending on the angle of the viewer. A single picture of a favela scene is broken up into a thousand human interactions revealing the vibrancy of life.
